Born in 1974 and built to serve, Engine 506 spent decades answering the call with the South Amboy Fire Department before retiring from service in 2000. Like many legends, she was nearly lost β sold off and sitting forgotten in a pawn shop β until we brought her back home and gave her a second life.
Today, this fully operational Mack CF pumper is more than a piece of fire service history β sheβs a showstopper. From the wail of the siren to the power of the deck gun, Engine 506 is a rolling tribute to a bygone era of firefighting.
More than a machine, Engine 506 is a survivor β an engine that has served generations, endured missteps, and been brought back from the brink. From its first alarm in South Amboy to its second career in Mount Carmel, through years of neglect and an almost unthinkable fate, the βLead Dogβ now stands as a symbol of resilience, tradition, and dedication.
It honors the firefighters who once rode its jump seats, inspires future generations, and keeps the proud history of the fire service alive wherever it goes.
And true to its nickname and motto:
βThe Lead Dog Goes Where He Wants.β
